About a year ago, I started considering whether I wanted to close down Chinese Medicine Central. I have been running the site for a decade, through many permutations and stages of my acupuncture career, and frankly I’d become too busy to keep it going.
A technological meltdown in early 2017 crystallized in my mind the desire to do something about the situation. I lost a lot of content during the meltdown, many links and images were broken, and important parts of the website became difficult to work with. This is to be expected in a site that’s been revised and updated hundreds of times over a decade of changing web technology standards.
It became clear that the only thing I could do is start over.
I have attempted to do other spin-off websites in the past, but they never stuck, because I really don’t need one more thing to manage, thanks. But this strange situation allowed me to consider a different possibility – simply erasing the old Chinese Medicine Central and erecting something new in its place.
CMC annex is the new space for my teaching, exploration of the topics of interest to me, and involvement by my stalwart cast of contributors worldwide. The old Chinese Medicine Central still lives – but it has become essentially archival. Over the next 6 months, I’ll be gradually updating, deleting and otherwise working with the old content at CMC, and piping it over to the new space when it passes muster. Eventually, everything will be consolidated and integrated and we’ll move forward with this new design.
Update as of 2017-08-22 : I’ve made the switch – everything is just Chinese Medicine Central again, no more Chinese Medicine Central Annex. I’m keeping this post here for posterity. 🙂
Of course, a fresh coat of paint isn’t the only thing in the works
This site has been a labor of love. I’ve sold courses, ebooks and coaching over the years, but the income from those sources never did much more than pay for the effort in the most basic way. That said, the site has a strong following of people who dearly love Chinese medicine as much as I do, and it has been a source of fun and strength for me as I’ve developed as a professional acupuncturist.
For the last 5 years or so, writing content on the site has become increasingly difficult, a situation I’ve documented on this site and elsewhere. Most of it has had to do with the fact that I’m busy with teaching and my clinics. But there was something energetic in the way as well – something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
With the creation of this new site, that block has been magically removed.
Writing has become easier, and I’m excited to bring forth all the new content and energy I’ve got to share. The site will develop a lot in the coming months, of course, but I’d like to direct you to a few spots to get you started.
